People often ask why did I become a chiropractor. The short answer is that I started receiving chiropractic care when I was a teenager and it seemed like a pretty cool job. How does any 16 year old really know what career they want? I was lucky. I chose a career that I have enjoyed for over 35 years.
My chiropractor was named John. He and his wife Judy were both Canadian trained Australian chiropractors and they had a very busy, very successful practice. John would see 6 patients every 15 minutes and Judy would see 3 patients in that time.
Thus, the two and a half minute adjustment.
I’m not going in to the mechanics of it but, as a kid, it’s what I thought normal chiropractic
treatment looked like. When I first started in Werribee, I was required to see 3 patients every 15 minutes. I was working for someone else and this was the pace he demanded. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I got the job because he suffered a heart attack in his early 40’s. That knowledge affected me a lot. My thinking was that if I worked myself at that pace, I’d probably have a heart attack in my 40’s too! The change didn’t occur overnight, but over the years I have progressively slowed down my pace to the current 15-20 minutes for a visit.
I hope you appreciate these longer appointments compared to other chiropractors. It gives me time to provide massage and heat packs, as well as talk through any concerns you have. It’s rewarding for me too. Many times I came home from the Werribee practice and couldn’t recall who I had seen or what I had said that day. It was a production line.
This more relaxed pace of treatment suits me and, looking at the large percentage of you who have remained loyal patients for years, it appears to suit you guys too.
So spread the word. Not every chiropractor is going to complete a treatment in under 5 minutes. I will spend a full hour with you on your first visit ( which almost 100% of the time will include treatment on the day) and a generous 15-20 minutes in the room with you during your standard visits.
